A few basics can take a wardrobe a lot further than many people think.

Almost everyone has fallen victim to the thousands of micro trends the internet produces yearly. Buying clothing we will only wear twice is not sustainable for the planet or for our budgets. The solution? A time capsule wardrobe.
The idea of a capsule wardrobe dates back to the 1970s when London boutique owner Susie Faux proposed the idea of owning a few timeless essential items, said Faux. The items may cost more, but they deliver more value because you can get more wear out of them.
It’s not easy to spend $30 on a white t-shirt until you ask yourself whether you will wear this more than an Urban Outfitters graphic tee of the same price. Chances are, yes. A time capsule wardrobe consists of a few pieces you can mix and match, style in many ways, and most importantly, never get sick of.
From the perfect pair of jeans to the most flattering black mini dress, certain pieces in everyone’s wardrobe are worth the investment. Here are 10 must-haves to start your time capsule wardrobe.
- Jean skirt – Long or short, everyone needs a jean skirt to dress up or dress down.
- Blazer – The oversized blazer has become a huge part of the business casual wardrobe. Styled with jeans or trousers a blazer is more universal than you may think.
- Denim jacket – The perfect everyday fall or spring jacket. Can be worn with a nice outfit for a night out to dinner or over a sweatshirt to a sports game.
- Shoulder bag- I am a firm believer that a simple shoulder bag can make wearing sweats look more put together than you may feel.
- Black mini dress- There are a million ways to accessorize and style a black mini dress, making it a staple in every wardrobe.
- White button-down- The “no pants trend” with an oversized button-down has become the new model-off-duty look. Beyond that trend, a button-down can be used for everything from a swimsuit cover-up to a business casual outfit.
- Basic t-shirt- A high-quality perfect-fit t-shirt is hard to find, but once you find it, it’s worth the price.
- Striped sweater – A striped sweater is the most universal patterned piece in a wardrobe.
- Leather jacket – The perfect going-out jacket. Brings together almost any outfit, unless you are wearing leather pants.
- The perfect jeans – Doesn’t matter the style or the wash, everyone needs a go-to pair of jeans regardless of the brand.
