First winter in Minnesota? Just know Minnesota is known for its long and cold winters. Here are some things that will help make the best of living in a cold climate.

Arboretum

Take a walk through a giant red apple at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum during its Winter Lights show. The arboretum features a giant metal structure of an apple honoring the development of the Honeycrisp by the University of Minnesota in 1960.

The show takes place in a natural setting, the Arboretum botanical garden, where the lights reflect off the surrounding landscape of conifers, evergreens and snow, said Sarah Jackson, Arboretum spokesperson.

Saint Paul Winter Carnival

Visit the 138th Saint Paul Winter Carnival which attracts over 100,000 visitors every year. At the carnival, you can compete in an ice fishing competition, race in the Saint Paul Winter Carnival Fire and Ice Run, view or compete in the ice sculpting competition or enjoy one of the many other activities offered at the carnival.

Skate at the OVAL

Learn to skate or perfect your figure skating at one of the many indoor and outdoor skating rinks across the Twin Cities. Located in Roseville is the Guidant John Rose MN OVAL. The OVAL largest outdoor refrigerated skating facility in North America. The 110,000 square feet are open to the public from November through March.

Ice Castles

Visit Ice Castles Minnesota, a frozen attraction built of icicles to create a variety of LED-lit sculptures. This year it’s located in Maple Grove, just 20 minutes from the Twin Cities. Slide down an ice slide, find your way through a frozen maze, have a drink at the polar pub, crawl through icy tunnels and view ice sculptures hand-carved by local artists.
